The history of sidewalk vault lights in Astoria

Vault Lights are one of many historical features here in Astoria. Vault Lights are the purple glass square tiles that are set into sidewalks. They allow daylight to shine through into the basements of businesses. These lights were first installed in Astoria in the early 1920's.
